Level 3 Media Studies

MED300
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms A. Neal.

Prerequisites

Students should have previously earned 10 credits from a literacy-rich subject to gain success in this class.

As a University Entrance approved subject, Level Three Media Studies enhances your critical thinking and research skills, as you explore a new development in the media and representations in the NZ media. You will script, plan, and make a media product of your choice, and study the rise of the Superhero genre post-9/11, and how genres are tied to the society it is produced in. The script provides U.E. Literacy writing credits, while the external provides 4 credits which could be for reading or writing.

This is an University Entrance approved subject.

Course Overview

Term 1
We begin by learning about the Coming of Age genre and writing our own coming of age short film script.

We will then turn this script into a plan for a short film. Here, you could also switch to make a documentary or mockumentary if you prefer.

Term 2
While making our short films, we will investigate a new development in the media. Here, you can choose a topic of your choice, as long as it has impacted the media and audiences in the last five years.

Term 3
This term, we prepare for our external by studying the impact 9/11 had on the 'golden age' of superhero films. We will look at the truth behind the propaganda and investigate the future of the genre.

Term 4
This is where we revise for our external.

Learning Areas:

Media Studies, Social Science
